It was lonely for a day or so until one morning some man, more recently arrived than I, stopped me on the road. 'How do you get to west West Egg village?' he asked me helplessly. I told him. And as I walked on I was lonely no longer. I was a guide, a pathfinder, an original settler. He had casually conferred on me the freedom of the neighbourhood.
And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing in the trees, just as things grows in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.

  1. I absolutely love this. Have read the book a couple of times - but never noticed this quote! It's beautiful!

  2. Halfway through now. (Walked in the woods with my dog the other day, and someone asked me about the path I just came from. He will never know how happy I was he didn't ask bout any other path. I was totally lost.)
